![]() My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Ye (2010) Now that’s how you shut those pesky haters up. While it’s debatable that The Blueprint is Jay-Z’s best record – he himself has said that he believes his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, is his best work – its influence is indisputable, quite literally mapping out the sonic blueprint for hip-hop production over the next few years. The result is soul-influenced exercise in bravado, as Jay-Z toots his own horn over carefully refined samples, confidently assuring listeners on “Hola’ Hovito” that “If I ain’t better than BIG, I'm the closest one”. At the time, he was one of the most dissed rappers in the game, with everyone from Nas to Prodigy firing shots his way, but while he fights back on “Takeover”, the rest of the album speaks for itself, reviving hip-hop’s sample culture with the help of a young Kanye West and Just Blaze’s production. If we’ve learned anything from the Michael Jordan documentary The Last Dance, it’s that the best way to come back at critics is to excel and that’s exactly what Jay-Z did on his sixth album, The Blueprint. As for the album’s lead single, “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, well, that can be heard at any party worth going to across the planet. With a legacy that is still very much alive and well, the sound of The Miseducation can still be heard in hip-hop and neo-soul releases today. ![]() Winning five Grammys, The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill made history as the first hip-hop album to ever win the coveted Album Of The Year prize, while she became the first woman to win five awards in one ceremony. ![]() ![]() Written in a burst of creativity inspired by her pregnancy with Rohan Marley, The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill is imbued in soul and thoughtful vulnerability, with occasional appearances from the likes of Mary J Blige and D’Angelo, as Hill smoothly slips in between rapping and singing with impressive ease. Lauryn Hill won the hearts of the public with Fugees’ The Score, but her debut solo album, The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, affirmed that she alone was a force to be reckoned with, her vocals and rapping prowess shining bright as the star of their own record. The group split and began work on solo projects just a year after The Score’s release, but that was enough time for it to put Fugees in the hip-hop hall of fame, changing the genre’s landscape forever. Each member of the band have the opportunity to really shine on this record, but The Score has to be noted for bringing Hill to a mainstream audience, with her vocals anchoring the group’s soulful sound on singles such as “Ready Or Not” and “Killing Me Softly With His Song”. Weaving together smart samples, live instruments and intelligent vignettes of ghetto life, The Score is intimate and thoughtful, at the time providing a broader appeal to masses who were skeptical about hip-hop music. If you talk that kind of talk, you sure as hell have to walk the walk and, upon release, The Score did not disappoint. “It’s almost like a hip-hop version of Tommy, like what The Who did for rock music,” said Lauryn Hill of Fugees’ second album, before it had even been released. Equipped with Death Row Records’ most celebrated producers – including, you guessed it, Dr Dre – to match his swaggering braggadocio, All Eyez On Me may not be 2Pac’s most thoughtful album, but it’s the one on which all elements came together harmoniously and, considering its sheer scale and quick turnaround, deserves to be remembered as one of the greats. While a tone of urgency runs through it, 2Pac’s work on this album is anything but sloppy, eschewing the more self-reflective themes explored on Me Against The World for an unashamed celebration of Thug Life. The rapper died in a drive-by shooting less than a year later, but not before the release of All Eyez On Me, an album that was hastily recorded in two weeks. In today’s world, no label in their right mind would have bailed him out for his crime, but that’s what Death Row Records did in 1995, forking out $1.4 million on the condition he would make three albums for them once released. At 27 songs long, 2Pac’s fourth and final album to be released during his lifetime is a tour de force of hip-hop, the first of its kind to ever be released for mass consumption and a ferocious return to music after spending eleven months in jail for sexual assault.

But when the Nia's price drops to Aura 2 levels ($70 regular, $50 on sale) the Nia will be a much easier sale and it would at that point be hard to argue for buying the Clara since the Nia is only a little bit worse. Overall the Kobo Clara HD is much better than the Nia and worth the extra money. Frankly the Nia just looks better (aesthetics of the design not the screen) than any previous Kobo model ever has excepting the Glo. I think that if you put the two in someone's hand and asked them which is the more expensive model they would guess the Nia. The Nia's body has a course texture to it that makes it look and feel more premium than it is. The plastic looks so cheap that it looks entry level. It is not 100% for the Clara however, because the plastic on the Nia looks much better in person than the Clara. The touch screen on the Clara is perfect. The Clara has better screen uniformity and you can adjust the color temperature of the light. But the Clara's ghosting issues are much more subtle than the Nia. Honestly it is hard to tell, the Nia's screen is pretty darned good. Nia vs Kobo Clara HD: The Clara has a 300 ppi screen, and so it looks slightly better than the Nia. Overall the Nia is much better than the Kindle 10.Īnd now the million dollar question that will answer if the Nia is overpriced. And I find that issue more frustrating than to type at slightly slower speed than I usually do. The Kindle has a more responsive touch screen than the Nia but it has a problem where routinely it will suddenly stop responding to touch, and the Nia does not. The Nia has some subtle flashlighting, but the Kindle 10's flashlighting is painfully obvious as soon as you turn the light on. Both can be fixed by adjusting the settings to full refresh the screen more often. They both suffer from excessive ghosting despite using Carta screens. The Nia's 212 ppi resolution looks much better than the 167 ppi of the Kindle 10. ![]() Nia vs Kindle 10: Numbers are misleading. The Nia has solved the outstanding problem the Aura 2 did, without introducing any other ones and was introduced at a lower price point than the Aura 2 was at launch. It can mess up if you go too fast, but you don't have to type terribly slow either (the Wired review was just hyperbolic). The Nia has a precise touch screen unlike the Aura 2. Nearly everything is identical about it, but the Nia puts the power button on the bottom of the ereader (stupid) and the Aura 2 put the power button on the back (smart). Aura 2: The Aura 2 had a nice design and so does the Nia. And when it launched everyone was angry at the time that Kobo had the audacity to charge so much when the Glo HD was obviously better. It had one outstanding problem which is that the touch screen was miscalibrated so you would always have to push a bit left of where you want and you would have to go slowing too. The Aura 2 had 212 ppi Carta screen and a frontlight with some mild flashlighting much like the Kobo Glo. But on Walmart (within the US) it regularly sold for $70 and would go on sale for $50. The Aura 2 was only $10 cheaper than the Glo HD and then the Clara for most of its life if you bought it from Kobo. ![]() I will not compare the Nia to the ad-free PW4 or higher since that is a completely different price bracket.įirst you have to know that the Nia replaces the Aura 2. I've owned every Kobo model since the Glo and every Kindle model since the third generation. I'm a crazed ereader collector, so without needing this at all I bought the Nia anyway. NEO Surveyor, which was singled out for extensive cuts by NASA in 2023, ultimately received $50 million more than requested, for a total of $90 million. the Planetary Science Division grew by $80M from 2022, with an additional $40 million above the Presidential request.Mars Sample Return received $822 million as requested, growing by nearly $200 million.Artemis funding grew by $613 million, primarily for the lunar Human Landing System to support a second provider and to continue building a second mobile launch tower for the SLS rocket.Congress supported proposed budget growth for NASA's human and scientific exploration programs, which are the primary interest of The Planetary Society: The final compromise legislation fell $554 million short of both the Senate and the President's spending proposals. Though the Senate released a budget matching that topline, the House of Representatives' legislation provided significantly less. The President's FY 2023 budget request for NASA proposed nearly $26 billion, an 8% increase. High inflation and growing labor costs will mitigate the purchasing power of this increase. This is roughly $1.3 billion more than NASA received in 2022, an increase of 5.6%. 1158 provides $510.7 million for WFIRST and $120 million for the Office of STEM Engagement.NASA will receive $25.4 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2023. ![]() ![]() Notably, Congress rejected the Trump administration's proposal to cancel the WFIRST program, and close the Office of STEM Engagement. The proposal would increase funding for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) by $283 million or 1.4 percent compared to FY2019 levels. ![]() The denarius itself became Rome’s most important currency unit and lasted into the mid third century AD. The most common division of the denarius was the silver sestertius, equivalent to 2½ asses. The first silver denarii were struck in high grade silver and with a weight of c. In 212 BC, or slightly later, a new coin, the silver denarius, appeared. There was a reduction of the weight of the silver and aes grave, then debasement of the silver. In the Second Punic War the Romans came under severe financial stress. The earliest of these struck issues are now thought to predate the currency bars and cast bronzes. They circulated in Campania and further south. The struck silver and bronze coins were modelled on the coinage of Magna Graecia, and were probably produced in Naples about 325-285 BC. These heavy cast coins continued to be issued until Rome’s financial crisis in the Second Punic War. In the later part of the third century BC the weight of the as was gradually reduced. A very small early coin was the semuncia (= a half ounce, that is, 1/24 of an as). The standardized currency of cast bronze ( aes grave) was based on the denomination of the as, which weighed one pound the double as was the dupondius. The production of currency bars (sometimes called aes signatum) appears to have ceased by the end of the First Punic War (they should not be confused with the much earlier Ramo Secco bars found in Etruria and Sicily). It appears to have had four main elements each developed independently: bronze currency bars, large cast bronze coins (known as aes grave) and struck silver and bronze coins. Early Roman coinage dates from around 300 BC. Your browser does not support the audio element. The early Republic did not use coinage but a system of bronze weights ( aes rude). Some of the more notable members are Steve Schroyder (organist, 1971–1972), Michael Hoenig (who replaced Baumann for a 1975 Australian tour and a London concert, included on Bootleg Box Set Vol. Unlike session musicians, these players also contributed to compositions of the band during their tenures. Other long-term members of the group include Peter Baumann (1971–1977), who later went on to found the new-age label Private Music, to which the band was signed from 1988 to 1991 Johannes Schmoelling (1979–1985) Paul Haslinger (1986–1990) Froese's son Jerome Froese (1990–2006) Linda Spa (1990–1996, 2005–2014), a saxophonist & flute player who appeared on numerous albums and concerts, contributing one track on Goblins' Club and most recently Thorsten Quaeschning of Picture Palace Music (2005–present).Ī number of other members were also part of Tangerine Dream for shorter periods of time. Franke stayed with the group for 17 years, leaving in 1988 because of exhausting touring schedules, as well as creative differences with Froese. Franke is credited with starting to use electronic sequencers, which were introduced on Phaedra, a development that had not only a large impact on the group's music but on many electronic musicians to this day. Franke joined Tangerine Dream in 1970 after serving time in the group Agitation Free, originally to replace Schulze as the drummer. įroese's most notable association was his partnership with Christopher Franke. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Tangerine Dream existed as several short-lived incarnations, all of which included Froese, who teamed up with several musicians from West Berlin's underground music scene, including Steve Jolliffe, Sven-Åke Johansson, Klaus Schulze, and Conrad Schnitzler. On 26 November 2021, the band released an EP entitled Probe 6–8 (including three tracks: "Raum", "Para Guy" and "Continuum"), whose concept was developed further on their following album Raum, their latest studio album to date which was released on 25 February 2022. In December 2019, they released Recurring Dreams, a compilation of new recordings of some of the band's classic compositions. On 29 September 2017, the band released an all-new music studio album entitled Quantum Gate. Their mid-1970s work has been profoundly influential in the development of electronic music styles such as new-age and electronic dance music. Among other scoring projects, they helped create the soundtrack for the video game Grand Theft Auto V. Their recorded output has been prolific, including over one hundred albums. The group also had a successful career composing film soundtracks, creating over 60 scores.įrom the late 1990s into the 2000s, Tangerine Dream continued to explore other styles of instrumental music as well as electronica. Their "Virgin Years", so called because of their association with Virgin Records, produced albums that further explored synthesizers and sequencers, including the UK top 20 albums Phaedra (1974) and Rubycon (1975). Their work with the electronic music Ohr label produced albums that had a pivotal role in the development of the German musical scene known as kosmische Musik ("cosmic music"). Tangerine Dream are considered a pioneering act in electronica. Schnauss only played two shows with Froese in November 2014 before Froese's passing. Prior to this Quaeschning and Yamane performed with Ulrich Schnauss from 2014 to 2020. Quaeschning is currently joined by violinist Hoshiko Yamane who joined in 2011 and Paul Frick who joined in 2020. Quaeschning is Froese's chosen successor and is currently the longest-serving band member, having joined in 2005. Since Froese's death in 2015, the group has been under the leadership of Thorsten Quaeschning. This lineup was notable for composing many movie soundtracks. In 1979, Johannes Schmoelling replaced Baumann until his own departure in 1985. ![]() The best-known lineup of the group was its mid-1970s trio of Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann.
